Send Christmas cards to family and friends wishing them a merry Christmas and a happy new year.

If Westward II: Heroes of the Frontier taking on the challenge of quest after quest isn't your cup of tea, you can exit the main game and play in Sandbox Open Range mode to get a feel for how the citizens behave, what makes them happy, and what the buildings do. Open Range starts with all buildings unlocked, so you only need pay to build them, not to unlock them. If you've already beaten the game and want a greater challenge, or you want the challenge without specific quests, try Sandbox Natural Disasters. Buildings are locked as normal, plus as you gain experience, the likelihood of an earthquake, fire, typhoon or bandit attack is steadily increased.

Dog Breed

No doubt about it, puppies are cute! If you are a dog lover, at one point or another you have


had the urge to get a puppy. Or perhaps your kids are begging to get a puppy. However, If you


are really serious about your dream of becoming a top quality dog breeder and have no interest


in breeding your dog "just once, just for fun", then you need to know a typical scenario describing


a breeder's activities and investments.

Here is a partial list of the kind of expenses that are to be expected if you are a serious breeder


of Great Danes. It really isn't much different with any other breed, though, because each breed


has its own particular health idiosyncrasies. I'm not even going to bring up the expense of


building, equipping, heating and lighting a kennel, nor property and liability insurance costs,


property taxes, zoning approval and depreciation and repairs!

1.) Your Great Dane needs to be registered through OFA-Orthopedic Foundation for Animals.


These x-rays show the hip joints and associated bony components and any deviations from


normal. If your dog doesn't pass, don't breed. This registry can not be done until the Dane is


2 years old (when the growth period is complete), so if you have a puppy, use this time to visit


the show or obedience ring and put some titles on. The OFA procedure requires deep sedation


or light anesthesia to execute properly and may cost you in the neighborhood of $150.00.


Another procedure, called the PENN HIP procedure is also used to evaluate the hips. This is


a fairly new method of showing any laxity of the hips, the dog should score high and well above


the medium.

2.) CERF- this is the registry of eye quality; a Board Certified Veterinary Specialist in Ophthalmology


must examine the eyes for any hereditary defects. Costs approximately $30.00 per year and


does have to be updated. (The specialist will charge you for the exam, too.)

3.) Cardiac- The heart evaluation needs to be run by a Board Certified Cardiologist usually at


a University and needs to be updated yearly also. Costs approximately $100.00

4.) Thyroid Function- This blood test can be done through your local veterinary hospital and is


a one-time evaluation... Costs approximately $50.00 to $80.00.

5.) DNA and Microchip are very important. These need to be registered through AKC (The


American Kennel Club) and are a must if you plan on using Artificial Insemination. DNA profile


and Microchip expenses vary greatly.

6.) Brucellosis- This test needs to be run prior to each breeding. It will show if the male or female


are carriers of this sexually transmitted disease. Costs approximately $40.00 to $80.00.

7.) Finally, take your dog to the veterinarian for any vaccinations and a preventative worming


before your dog is to be bred. Of course, male dogs can't transmit intestinal parasites or viral


diseases to the pups like the dam might. But his health is vitally important nonetheless.

By now, some of you may have noticed that I've got about 600 more MySpace friends than I had a month ago. This has much less to do, I suspect, with how lovable I am than with the fact that I'm on Supernatural and that the word got out that I had a MySpace page. I'm also completely unable to respond to all of the hundreds of messages and comments I'm getting. I try to respond to as many as I can, but I'm having a really hard time making a dent in the ones that are coming in.




So keep two things in mind: I'm really delighted to hear from you all. And please don't take it personally if you don't hear back from me. I'm amazed that so many people want to be in contact, and if I could, I would sit and write notes of thanks or answers or just conversation with everyone who writes me. But I Googled the word "reality" the other day and it said that there's only 24 hours in a day most places, and since it would take more than that to stay on top of all the messages I get now that my friends list has exploded, I hope no one will take offense if they don't hear back from me in a timely fashion. Since most of us will be grilling this weekend here are a few tips to keep in mind. Follow all safety instructions listed in your manufacturer's manual that came with your grill otherwise use common sense. Keep your grill on stable ground and away from flammables. Never leave your grill unattended because that is when accidents happen.

Gas Grill Safety Tips

• Check grill hoses for cracking, brittleness, holes, and leaks. Make sure there are no sharp bends in the hose or tubing.


• Move gas hoses as far away as possible from hot surfaces and dripping hot grease.


• Always keep propane gas containers upright.


• Never store a spare gas container under or near the grill or indoors.


• Never store or use flammable liquids, like gasoline, near the grill.


• Never keep a filled container in a hot car or car trunk. Heat will cause the gas pressure to increase, which may open the relief valve and allow gas to escape.

Charcoal Grill Safety Tips

• Never burn charcoal inside of homes, vehicles, tents, or campers


• Charcoal should never be used indoors, even if ventilation is provided.


• Since charcoal produces CO fumes until the charcoal is completely extinguished, do not store the grill indoors with freshly used coals.


• Have fun, enjoy yourself and don't forget to try new techniques that will make your outside grill a thrill for you and your family.

1-child policy has exceptions after China quake

Chinese officials said Monday that the country's one-child policy exempts families with a child killed, severely injured or disabled in the country's devastating earthquake.

Those families can obtain a certificate to have another child, the Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in the capital of hard-hit Sichuan province said.

With so many shattered families asking questions, the Chengdu committee is clarifying existing one-child policy guidelines, said a committee official surnamed Wang.

"There are just a lot of cases now, so we need to clarify our policies," said Wang, who declined to elaborate.

The May 12 quake was particularly painful to many Chinese because it killed so many only children.

The earthquake has left more than 65,000 people dead so far, with more than 23,000 missing. Officials have not been able to estimate the number of children killed.

Chinese couples who have more than one child are commonly punished by fines. The announcement says that if a child born illegally was killed in the quake, the parents will no longer have to pay fines for that child - but the previously paid fines won't be refunded.

If the couple's legally born child is killed and the couple is left with an illegally born child under the age of 18, that child can be registered as the legal child - an important move that gives the child previously denied rights including free nine years of compulsory education.

China's one-child policy was launched in the late 1970s to control China's exploding population and ensure better education and health care. The law includes certain exceptions for ethnic groups, rural families and families where both parents are only children.

The government says the policy has prevented an additional 400 million births, but critics say it has also led to forced abortions, sterilizations and a dangerously imbalanced sex ratio as local authorities pursue sometimes severe birth quotas set by Beijing and families abort girls out of a traditional preference for male heirs.

Though commonly called a one-child policy, the rules offer a welter of exceptions and loopholes, some of them put into practice because of widespread opposition to the limits.

For example, in large parts of rural China, most families are allowed a second-child, especially if the first was a girl. Local officials often have wide discretion on enforcement, a fact that has made the policy susceptible to corruption.

Many Chinese have shown interest in adopting earthquake orphans, and Monday's announcement says there are no limits on the number of earthquake orphans a family can adopt. The adoptions, or even a future birth to a family that adopts an orphan, will not face the limitations of the one-child policy.

Officials estimated last week that the quake left about 4,000 orphans, but they warned they would make every effort to connect children with other family members.

It is now raining.

This morning I will start with a safe subject: the weather.

Less than one week ago it was hot here in San Bernardino. It reached 103 degrees Saturday. Yesterday the high reached about 70 degrees, it dropped 30 degrees.

We need the rain, especially at this house. The house was vacant a long time and the backyard is dead. It needs water to revive what Senor calls devil grass.

While we were B-B-Qing last night, I drew out a plan for the backyard which includes my vegetable garden. I also drew a rose garden, an herb garden (with rosemary and mint in containers), and a flower garden. The avocado tree is setting fruit and I believe we may have a lime tree or "suckers" emerging. I'll have to take the leaves and small fruit into a nursery to find out if, in fact, it is a lime tree. I do prefer lime over lemon for cooking.

His trusty assistant was there to help.

All the outlets work properly now. I took pictures of the outlets prior to their repair and afterwards.
